Robert J. Weimer retired as Getty Professor of Geology from the Colorado School of Mines in 1993. A major contributor to his field's understanding of hydrocarbon systems, Weimer is the recipient of the 2006 Legendary Geoscience Award from the American Geological Institute and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1992.

He received the 1996 Distinguished Educator Award from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for being "a geologist and master educator, for creating and communicating new ideas that have advanced the science of geology and its integration with other disciplines."

Weimer earned a master's degree in geology from the University of Wyoming in 1949 and a Ph.D. in geology from Stanford University in 1953. He was given the UW Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1982.
