Sept. 28, 2006 -- “Buckin’ on the Bayou,” is the theme of the 2006 University of Wyoming Homecoming Week Oct. 7-14.
“This theme conjures up sweet thoughts of Cajun music, jambalaya, and red beans and rice. It also helps us remember the folks who are still struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,” says Molly McClure, who heads the Homecoming Committee with Jane France.
Activities include the annual parade, open houses, receptions, seminars, dinners, class reunions, college hospitality events and Mountain West Conference football and volleyball games with the University of Utah.
Among the week's highlights is the annual Iron Skull Homecoming Sing, Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.
Activities on Friday, Oct. 13, include the College of Arts and Sciences Morning of Courses at 9 a.m. in the Wyoming Union ballroom. Top faculty from the Department of Chemistry will discuss topics such as detection of biological weapons, chemical reactions that can help prevent and cure diseases, and production of solar electricity and artificial photosynthesis.
At 3 p.m. Friday in the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium is the annual Keith and Thyra Thomson Honors convocation. The speaker will be one of the nation's top forensic anthropologists and UW distinguished alumnus Doug Owsley, curator and division head for physical anthropology at the Smithsonian National Museum.
Among Friday class reunions at 6 p.m. are the Class of 1956 at the Laramie Ramada Center Inn; and the Class of 1966 at the Laramie Country Club.
Among the events Saturday, Oct. 14, are the parade at 9:30 a.m. starting at 9th and Ivinson streets; the alumni luncheon starting at 11 a.m. in the Crane-Hill dining area, tickets cost $12, or $8 for children; the football game at 1 p.m; the College of Engineering hall of fame banquet at 7 p.m.; and the volleyball game at 7 p.m.
