Sept. 27, 2002 Carol Tome, chief financial officer of The Home Depot, will discuss "Tools for Leadership" at the 2002 University of Wyoming College of Arts and Sciences Keith and Thyra Thomson Honors Convocation Friday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m. in the A&S auditorium.

The Honors Convocation is open to the public. For more information call the A&S Dean's Office at 307 766 2755, or send e mail to asdean@uwyo.edu. The event, which honors those students who have made the President's, Deans' or Freshmen honor rolls during the previous academic year, also will feature three undergraduate speakers.

A Jackson native who received her B.S. in communication from UW and her M.B.A. in finance from the University of Denver, Tome began working for Home Depot in 1995. She is responsible for financial reporting, financial operations, business valuation, planning and analysis, divisional finance, internal audit, investor relations and all other corporate financial matters, including treasury and tax. Fortune Magazine in 2001 named her "The 40th Most Powerful Woman in America." She currently resides with her husband Ramon in Cobb County, Ga.

Other speakers are three A&S students who were selected from among undergraduates nominated by professors from all college disciplines. They will present their independent research at the convocation.

Jared Michael Long of Cheyenne is completing his degrees in American studies, geography and education. His research extended to Ground Zero in New York City, where he studied how the standards and spirit of human interaction change when symbolic buildings are destroyed.

Aura Newlin of Riverton is striving to complete a self designed major in ethnomusicology (the study of music in various cultures). She applied her studies in Japan, where she researched the Japanese bamboo flute, the Shakuhachi. Newlin also is completing minor degrees in both music and Spanish.

Scott E. Newton of Green River is earning degrees in psychology and English and is most interested in how people communicate, think, feel and behave. Newton is an active member in the President's Senior Class Ambassadors, as well as the UW Honors Program.
