Oct. 21, 2005 -- Former U.S. Sen. Al Simpson will hold a public discussion with 41st President of the United States George H.W. Bush in the University of Wyoming Arena-Auditorium (A-A) on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Bush will be in Laramie to participate in the grand finale celebration of UW's DISTINCTION fundraising campaign, which raised nearly $204 million during a five-year period. Simpson served as chairman of the campaign.

Members of the public may enter the A-A at the Willett East entrance beginning at 12:30 p.m. for the 2 p.m. event. Backpacks or other large bags, any weapons including pocket knives, signs, banners, posters or similar materials will not be allowed in the A-A; handbags and diaper bags are discouraged and will be searched, and all attendees may be required to pass through electronic screening devices. Members of the public are encouraged to arrive early and should be in their seats by 1:45 p.m. No one leaving the building will be readmitted.

The campus and express shuttles will continue to operate, though traffic could be disrupted at times.

Parking for the public will be available in most campus lots except those in the general vicinity of the A-A (the "A" and "C" permit lots south and west of the Fieldhouse and north of the Fine Arts Building), which will be closed and barricaded beginning Monday, Oct. 24, after 5 p.m. Vehicles entering or remaining in those lots after 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, will be towed.

Individuals who normally would park in those lots on Tuesday, Oct. 25, may park in the free shuttle lot near 15th St. and Willett Drive and take the Union Express shuttle, which will stop across Willett from the Arena-Auditorium.

Those attending the public discussion event should park in the War Memorial Stadium (east gravel) lot, with approach to the lot from the east. Disability parking is available by permit in the west row of Arena-Auditorium parking. Vehicles must be removed from this disability parking area by 3:30 p.m. after the public discussion. A parking map for the event is available on the UW Web site at www.uwyo.edu/bushvisit.

The Fieldhouse will be closed because of the former president's visit on Monday, Oct. 24, until midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Supervisors have been encouraged to authorize administrative leave for staff so they may participate. Faculty members have been encouraged to exercise flexibility in allowing students to attend. Residents of and visitors to Laramie are advised that normal traffic patterns may be disrupted during the day.
