Jan. 26, 2005 -- A free panel discussion, "The Iraqi Elections: Road Map to Democracy?" will be offered Tuesday, Feb. 1, from 4-6 p.m. in the University of Wyoming College of Agriculture auditorium.
The UW Muslim Student Association (MSA) will host the event. Panel members are Francois Dickman, former U.S. ambassador to Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates and former UW political science faculty member; Garth Massey, director of UW's International Studies Program; Marianne Kamp, assistant professor of history; and Seth Ward, visiting professor in the Religious Studies Program.
Elections for the new 275-member national assembly, open to all Iraqi citizens including those abroad, will take place Sunday through Tuesday. The voting period was extended from one day to three to allow more opportunity for registration and participation. Polling locations are in various cities around the world, including Baltimore, Nashville, Detroit, and Chicago, according to Dickman. Elections in the 18 Iraqi provinces will be held in conjunction with the general election.
The vision of MSA is "to establish an active unified Muslim community at UW that facilitates each Muslim's practice of Islam."
