March 14, 2003 -- While much of the world is focused on the possibility of war with Iraq, the University of Wyoming Department of Political Science will host a forum designed to examine the broad challenges to U.S. foreign policy and global security that might result from military action in the Middle East.

The forum, featuring former U.S. Sen. Alan K. Simpson, will be held Wednesday, March 26, at 9 a.m. in the Wyoming Union Family Room. The forum is free and open to the public.

Among the questions to be examined are the implications a U.S.-led war with Iraq might have for the future of the existing world political order, the implications of unilateral military action in Iraq on U.S. foreign policy and relationships with other nations and regions, and the relevance of the United Nations since Sept. 11, 2001.

Participants, in addition to Simpson, will be Jean Garrison, UW assistant professor of political science, who writes about American foreign policy; Steve Ropp, UW professor of political science, who specializes in world politics and Latin America; and Xin Xu, a UW graduate student in political science who recently earned a bachelor of laws degree from Nankai University, People's Republic of China.

For more information, call Garrison or Ropp at (307) 766-6484.
