Reasons for choosing Fleenor for 2017 award recipient

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) faculty is pleased to announce the selection of Jim Fleenor as the School of Nursing's 2017 recipient of the Excellence in Advanced Practice Nursing Award. The reasons for Fleenor's selection as recipient of the award are his commitment to.

  • providing excellent psychiatric care to individuals experiencing severe mental illness

  • educating the next generation of Psych NPs

"Spending time with Jim," says Nancy McGee, DNP faculty, "one quickly learns that he is a gifted listener and one who cares deeply for the human condition--qualities that have undoubtedly helped him to excel in his role as a Psych NP."

Looking at Fleenor’s Curriculum Vitae (CV), one is struck by his pre-nursing work, which includes four years working as an aviation mechanic for an agricultural flight company and 17 years working as a conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad. McGee comments, "You can’t help but acknowledge how these experiences--working with people from all walks of life--helped shape him into the empathetic, wise Nurse Practitioner he has become."

More on Fleenor's background

Jim graduated with his Master’s degree from the University of Wyoming Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Program in 2005. He then began working as an FNP at Cathedral Home for Children, a residential treatment facility in Laramie for at-risk youth. During both his time in the FNP program and his first FNP position, Jim displayed a passion for psychiatric mental health care. So he returned to UW in 2009 to pursue a post-master’s certificate as a Psychiatric Mental Health NP.

After finishing the Psychiatric Mental Health NP certificate program, Fleenor then took a position as Psych Mental Health NP at the Wyoming State (psychiatric) Hospital in Evanston, where he has been employed since 2011. Fleenor works on the Forensics Unit and specializes in forensic nursing--the intersection of the legal system with the health care system. While at the State Hospital, Jim has also precepted a number of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner students. He recently became an adjunct faculty member with the UW FWW School of Nursing.
