Nursing Careers:
Acute Care Nursing

With specialties in Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant

Emily Nicole Hill, RN, BSN

  • BSN '13

What drew you to this career?

Several factors drew me to this career:

  • I knew that I wanted to be able to be in an area that allowed me to have more long-standing relationships with my patients.

  • Secondly, I wanted to have a dynamic work environment; consistent, but not too routine.

  • Thirdly, I see myself as a "TLC" type of nurse. I enjoy being able to really make a difference in the lives of my patients during their difficult times.

How did you prepare for it?

I prepared for a career in Acute Care by working as a CNA, being a Summer III [that is the name of the Mayo Clinic externship employment experience for junior nursing students, during which they participate in direct and indirect patient care], and striving for a Medical and ICU placement for my senior practicum.

What do you like the most about this career?

I love being able to make a difference in my patients' lives. I enjoy the patient education and trust that they place in us with their care. Our patients are often very high acuity as well, so caring for them is also mentally challenging, and I am constantly learning something new.

What are the biggest challenges?

Emotional balance and burnout are challenges in the Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant units.

What advice would you have for a student interested in this field?

Try it out! Be open in communicating with your manager and coworkers about concerns and thoughts that you have. Make sure to supplement your work-life balance with plenty of self-care!!
