Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Janey Edwards Dyson
(BSN, '75)

What drew you to a career in Labor & Delivery and the NICU?

I love maternal child nursing. I love taking care of adults and infants and watching the creation of a new family unit.

How did you prepare for it?

I did a preceptorship right out of college.

What do you like the most about this career?

I love the growth that has occurred over the span of my career. I continue to learn and change and be challenged by nursing.

What are the biggest challenges?

Day shift starts way too early.

What advice would you have for a student interested in this field?

Research the many internships that are out there for NICU and Labor & Delivery. Learn the disease entities and treatment well before you start.

Janey Edwards Dyson Update 2012:

I am married to my husband of 34 years and we have three grown children. Our oldest daughter is an OB/GYN, our son is a lawyer, and our youngest is in her last year of nursing school and plans to go into the NICU.
