Clinical Assistant Professor

GET TO KNOW YOUR FACULTY Series: Nancy McGee

What courses do you normally teach?

  • Evidence Based Practice.

What students (e.g., in which program/s) will most likely have you as a professor during their program tenure?

I am currently teaching in the DNP program.

What brought you to Wyoming, UWYO?

I joined the UW FWWSON faculty hoping to help revive the Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner track of the DNP program. I have been a practicing Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) for the last seven years. The need for increased psychiatric care in the state of Wyoming is apparent. I am excited to be at the forefront of developing a program that will prepare students to fill these care needs.

How long have you been with UW SoN?

I am very new to UW SoN as faculty. Although I accepted my position this summer (8/2014), I deferred my start date until January, 2015 as I spent the fall enjoying the birth of my third child.

Where were you before you came here and what were you doing previous to this position at UW?

Although I am new to the School of Nursing, I have been working for the university for the last 7 years. I have worked for the Student Health Service providing psychiatric and mental health care for students since 2008. I continue to work part-time for the Student Health Service in addition to my faculty position.

What is your passion area?

I am passionate about providing evidence based, quality mental health care to the vulnerable populations in our rural state of Wyoming. I truly love my clinical practice and am excited to share this passion with future students who will pursue the FPMHNP track of the DNP program.

If you are doing research, please also talk about that.

I do not have any formal research pursuits at this time. However, I have focused much of my research in the past on suicide--specifically on the identification of at risk individuals as well as the care surrounding individuals at risk for suicide.

Many faculty have “side interests” that help define who they are. Can you share?

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family. I am married and have three small children (5 years, 3 years, and 5 months)--so this keeps most of my free time full, and I would not want it any other way.

Do you see a relationship now or in the future with your side interest linking up with nursing?

As a mother, I would say I am often linking my nursing role with my parenting.

What do you like best about teaching?

I am very much enjoying the relationships I have begun to develop with students. I am enjoying the teaching role more than I ever thought I would and it is proving to be a fun new challenge from my previous clinical roles.
