Our innovative DNP program has unique requirements regarding time commitment, on-campus intensives, and clinical placements. Before applying to our program, please read through our Frequently Asked Questions to make sure that our program meets your needs.

Criteria

The FWWSON DNP program uses a holistic approach to admissions. The program promotes a culture of collegiality, scholarship, innovation, and professionalism. We are committed to academic and clinical rigor. We desire individuals who are dedicated to being leaders in rural primary and mental health care. We admit individuals with varying backgrounds and experiences who will respect and learn from each other, and will adhere to the highest professional standards. We admit individuals who possess intellectual abilities and proven academic skills that make it likely they will successfully complete our program and embody its outcomes.

Criteria:

  • Minimum of 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA)

  • Students seeking admission into the College of Health Sciences are required to obtain and pay for a criminal background check. The results of your criminal background check may determine if you will be admitted to the program. The background check can be obtained from: https://www.viewpointscreening.com/uwyo

  • Earned Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a nationally accredited program or anticipated graduation from a nationally accredited BSN program by August 20, 2024

  • Active, unencumbered Wyoming RN license by May 1, 2025. License must be active throughout entire program.

DNP Admission

Application items for all options:

[NOTE: It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the application is complete prior to the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.] 

  1. Graduate Application for 2024:
    Applications for the fall 2023 cohort will open July 20, 2023.
  2. Transcripts - from all previously attended colleges and universities. If the University of Wyoming (UW) is the last college that you attended, there is no need to request your transcripts, because UW will have all of your transcripts on file already.

  3. Essay

    • FNP OPTION:
      In a 2-3 page essay, use APA-style format and include references/sources to discuss the following:

      (a) Research the role of a FNP and discuss what aspects of this role appeal to you and why.

      (b) Describe your goals as a DNP-prepared FNP.

      (c) Discuss what aspects of UW’s DNP-FNP Program of Study (FNP option) and mission & philosophy most reflect your goals and learning philosophy and why

    • PMHNP OPTION:
      In a 2-3 page essay use APA-style format and include references/sources to discuss the following:

      (a) Research the role of a PMHNP and discuss what aspects of this role most appeal to you and why.

      (b) Describe your goals as a DNP-prepared PMHNP.

      (c) Discuss what aspects of UW’s DNP-PMHNP Program of Study (PMHNP option) and mission & philosophy most reflect your goals and learning philosophy and why

  4. Curriculum vita (CV)

    • Employment history
      - Nursing jobs or experiences (may include volunteer work)—(duties, dates of employment, approximate # hours)
      - Employment if different from above (duties, dates of employment, approximate # of hours)

    • Certifications and licensure

    • Teaching experiences (institution, course names and course levels [Associate’s Bachelor’s, Graduate], applicant's role in course, course format [e.g., online, face to face])

    • Academic history (schools and location of schools, degree, major, graduation month and year)

    • Publications

    • Presentations

    • Memberships and activities in professional organizations

    • List of continuing education experiences in last 3 years (name, date, hours, CE sponsor)

  5. 3 Professional Letters of Recommendation
    [Upload first and last names, email addresses, and position titles for your preferred recommenders in the recommender section of the Graduate Application.] Your recommenders will receive an email from the University of Wyoming Admissions (subject line will read, "your name's request for a recommendation"). Letters must be written on professional letterhead with an original signature.

    Choose reference writers carefully. Writers should be knowledgeable about applicant's preparation and/or qualifications for DNP education (i.e., employers or instructors).

  6. On-Campus Interview
    Personal interviews are by invitation only and will be conducted virtually.

Admission Procedure/Timeline

  • Complete applications are essential. We highly recommend you do not wait to the last minute to complete your application. Please communicate application deadline and procedures to individuals completing your letters of recommendation.

  • We will utilize a rolling admission process to assure that each cohort is filled with the highest quality applicants. We will review all completed applications received until each cohort is filled, the priority application deadline is October 4, 2023. Students who submit their completed applications by the priority deadline will receive the strongest consideration for acceptance into the program. The final date to submit a completed application is January 5, 2024.

  • If you submit your application after the priority deadline, your application will be reviewed following the admission decision for the priority applicants. If seats are available after the priority interview decisions, a second interview will be conducted in early February. Applicants will be notified of an invitation to interview within two weeks of the second interview date. 

  • All applicants will be notified of admission decisions via email one week following the interview date. To confirm admission and reserve a spot in the program, accepted individuals must return a signed acceptance form and travel agreement, pay the non-refundable $500 seat fee, submit a negative 10-panel drug screen, and submit a College of Health Sciences background check by February 1,2024. The seat deposit is non-refundable and will go towards first semester tuition.

Note that international DNP students are required to live in Laramie, WY throughout the DNP program.
