Freshman Admission to Nursing Major: Fall 2021

Basic BSN freshman admission application and requirements are reviewed annually and subject to change. Information identified is for the upcoming fall 2021 application only. Monitor website annually in late summer/early fall for updates related to the following fall admission.

Freshman Admission Statement

The Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing (FWWSON) Basic BSN Program uses a holistic approach to freshman admissions. We are committed to academic and clinical rigor. We desire individuals with diverse backgrounds who are enthusiastic and have a strong work ethic. We value applicants who possess strong communication, critical thinking, and evolving leadership skills. We are looking for individuals who demonstrate respectful, professional, ethical, and caring behavior. Individuals with these qualities will be the best fit for our program.

APPLYING: WHEN, WHAT & HOW

WHEN TO APPLY

For freshman admission consideration to the nursing major for Basic BSN, prospective applicants must apply and be admitted to the University of Wyoming (UW) by February 1, 2021 to begin Fall 2021. This is the first step in the FWWSON freshman admission review.

...acceptance to the University of Wyoming does not imply acceptance to Basic BSN.

University of Wyoming Admission 

Application/admission criteria are located on the UW Admissions website, (www.uwyo.edu/admissions/.

  • As part of the university application, applicants select Nursing - Pre-Basic BSN (Laramie Campus) (PNRS) as their major in order to be included in the School of Nursing review.

  • Recommend not using high school email address, but rather a different provider when applying to UW. We have found that some contacts to high school emails are blocked and not going through to the applicant.

    [NOTE: If already applied to UW with high school email identified, please contact UW Admissions Office to see about updating preferred personal email to a non-high school email address.]

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The following are requirements for freshman admission consideration to the nursing major for Basic BSN*:

Test Scores

The UW Admissions Office must be in receipt of official Math ACT/SAT or MPE test score by February 1, 2021 deadline (refer to Admission Criteria).

...as noted on the UW Admissions website (Admissions Requirements), test scores are not required for admission to UW for the 2021-22 academic year. However, it further notes on the Scholarships link that ACT/SAT test scores are required for consideration of certain scholarships/funding opportunities. 

Official High School Transcripts

The UW Admissions Office must be in receipt of official high school transcript by February 1, 2021 deadline, preferably reflecting coursework completed through fall of senior year (send updated transcripts as needed). 

English Language Proficiency Policy

Refer to 'English Language Proficiency Policy' for admission requirements related to non-native English-speaking students.

...applicants held to the English Language Proficiency Policy for nursing admission are required to have TOEFL scores on record with the university by the February 1, 2021 deadline documenting acceptable scores as noted within that policy.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

The following are the criteria used in the first step of the FWWSON freshman admission review in February following UW Admission*:

For freshman admission consideration to the nursing major...

...the minimum criteria are:

  • 23 ACT or 560 SAT math score (SAT math score may vary annually based on UW Math placement review)

    Fall 2021 Prospective Applicants:
    If ACT/SAT scores are not available due to test site limitations related to COVID-19, a minimum Math Placement Exam (MPE) score of 3 will also be considered (refer to Math Placement website for details).

  • 2.75 cumulative, unweighted high school grade point average (GPA), preferably following completion of fall of senior year

...meeting the minimum criteria for freshman admission consideration does not guarantee admittance to Basic BSN as a freshman.

[NOTE: The FWWSON freshman admission review in February is based on test scores/high school transcripts on record with UW and accessible by the FWWSON by the February 1, 2021 deadline.]

    Next steps for students who are applying for the University of Wyoming, BSN Program (Basic BSN):

    • Determine if you meet criteria (refer to Admission Criteria in section above).

  • Prospective Applicant who MEETS all of the Minimum Criteria


    The FWWSON will contact prospective applicants, who meet the specified minimum criteria, in February regarding the next steps in the FWWSON freshman admission review.

    The next steps will include completion of a separate Basic BSN Freshman Admission Application Packet. Contacts will be via the email address provided within the UW Admission Application (closely monitor email in February, as there will be a quick turn-around for completion/submission of this application packet).

    As part of the FWWSON freshman admission review, in addition to academics (test score/high school GPA), the following criteria will also be considered utilizing the Basic BSN Freshman Admission Application Packet, which includes Essay Components (Written & Oral):

    • Work experience

    • Extra-curricular activities

    • Honors/awards/accolades

    • Leadership activities

    • UW Residency Status (as defined by UW)

    Prospective Applicants who are offered freshman admission to the nursing major...

    ...will have their major updated to BS in Nursing-Basic BSN Track (NURS).

    ...will be advised through the Basic BSN Advising office (see Basic BSN Advising/Registration).

  • Prospective Applicant who DOES NOT MEET all of the Minimum Criteria


    Prospective applicants who do not meet the specified criteria:

    ...are encouraged to consider retesting and submitting new scores (time permitting) and/or submitting updated high school transcripts as applicable to the university. [NOTE: UW must be in receipt of any updated test scores and/or high school transcripts by the February 1, 2021 deadline in preparation of the FWWSON freshman admission review in February.]

    The FWWSON will contact prospective applicants, who do not meet the specified criteria, in February regarding the next steps.

    Prospective Applicants who are not accepted for freshman admission...

    ...are encouraged to consider attending UW still and working towards applying to the program later through non-freshman admission.

    ...will be advised through the Advising, Career, & Exploratory Studies (ACES) office (aces@uwyo.edu or 307-766-2398)

    ...are encouraged to take the pre-clinical courses as outlined in the Basic BSN Program of Study [find linked form on main Basic BSN page].

    ...are encouraged to apply in the fall semester in which completing final pre-clinical courses for any unfilled seats for Basic BSN through Non-Freshman Admission to the Nursing Major.

    ...are welcome to visit the Basic BSN advising office to ensure they are taking the appropriate pre-clinical courses in preparation of the non-freshman admission application (see Basic BSN Advising/Registration).

Freshman Admission Means of Notification

All application and admission contacts/notifications made by the School of Nursing are through personal email. No hardcopy mailings sent to applicants regarding admission status.

  • Closely monitor personal email (provided on UW application, preferably a non-high school email as noted) in February (all prospective applicants) as well as in late March/early April (applicants meeting admission criteria) for notifications from the School of Nursing.

  • Admission decisions and notification of placements occurs around mid-April prior to the May 1 UW Enrollment Confirmation deadline.

  • As was previously noted, we recommend not using high school email address, but rather a different provider when applying to UW. We have found that some contacts to high school emails are blocked and not going through to the applicant.

    If already applied to UW with high school email identified, please contact UW Admissions Office to see about updating preferred personal email to a non-high school email address.

  • Some notifications have response deadlines.

    These notifications may pertain to admission status and/or program expectations associated with freshman admission to the nursing major.

Background Check

The College of Health Sciences requires students offered freshman admission to the nursing major for Basic BSN to obtain and pay for a background check. The FWWSON alerts students through admission letters [via email] regarding when and where to obtain the background check; students should not begin process until asked to do so by the School of Nursing. If students complete the background check prior to receiving a School of Nursing admission letter instructing them to do so, the students must repeat the process. The results of the background check may determine final admittance to our program.

Technical Standards for Admission

Students offered freshman admission to the nursing major for Basic BSN are required to attest to the FWWSON Technical Standards for Admission. The FWWSON alerts students through admission letters (via email) regarding when and where to obtain the required verification form.
