Gillette High School students learning about the process of pressing oil out of camelina (UWCES)
Oilseed crops are plants such as canola, sunflowers, camelina and brown mustard. These plants all contain many seeds which have a very high oil content. Many of them are also suited to arid environments and have relatively short growing seasons which make them potentially feasible for production in Wyoming.
Currently there are several research projects taking place in Wyoming to determine crop viability and uses for both the oil and the meal left over once the oil is extracted. Current research is examining the use of the oil in biodiesel production and the meal as a livestock feed.
