The Outreach School Mission

The UW Outreach School extends the University of Wyoming to our state and the world, while bringing the world to Wyoming.

The Outreach School Vision

In our efforts to help make UW the premier land grant institution, during the next five years, the University of Wyoming Outreach School will continue to be a leader in providing accessible, affordable, and innovative education of measurable excellence to learners across the state and the world.

We plan to maintain a pattern of growth, while striving to reach increasing numbers of students and learners through the Outreach Divisions: Outreach Credit Programs, the University of Wyoming at Casper, Outreach Technology Services, Wyoming Public Media, and the International Programs Office. This pattern of growth is distinctive: During the past five years, our student numbers have increased by about 9% per year; Wyoming Public Media serves 60,000 listeners and 31,000 online media consumers; International Programs hosts over 200 sponsored and exchange students each year, sends nearly 400 students abroad for study and internships, and provides dozens of faculty and staff members each year with immigration and citizenship services.

Connection Between the Outreach School Mission and Our Vision

As the Outreach School extends the reach of the University of Wyoming through our physical and virtual presence, Outreach participates directly in improving individual lives. In the process, we help to connect individuals to our communities, the state, the global marketplace, and the marketplace of ideas.

Our Priorities:

"Learning is not obtained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and
attended to with diligence."

Abigail Adams

In order to meet the growth in a number and variety of learners, the Outreach School must be able to help attract and support the finest UW programs and faculty, encourage and sustain learners, and develop and maintain the most stable, robust, and effective technological infrastructure to connect learners to the university. A partnership with alumni, friends, and supporters will allow the Outreach School to support access and learning opportunities that accommodate the continuing growth in the number of learners we serve and the variety of programs we offer.

The Outreach School will focus on four areas of distinction as we channel our efforts to support the university’s goals:

  • Learning
  • Access
  • Partnerships and synergism
  • Welcoming growth

Much of what the Outreach School will be able to accomplish in the future will be through partnerships that create productive synergisms for the effective utilization of intellectual, technological, and financial resources. We invite your support for Outreach School programs that will enhance opportunities for learning and access and allow us to accommodate the rapid growth of the numbers of learners we serve and the learning opportunities we provide.

Needed Resources:

In order to increase the range of educational experiences offered through Outreach, we will need to plan for and fund:

  • Regional leadership in innovative distance education and on-site programs off the main Laramie campus in its many evolving forms.
  • New courses and degree programs at the Casper campus and available at a distance through the division of Outreach Credit Programs.
  • Advancing of strategic partnerships with Wyoming’s community colleges, which will allow more students to complete advanced level degrees at locations beyond the Laramie campus.
  • The ability to create and fully participate in additional partnerships within the West, for example, WICHE ICE (Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education Internet Course Exchange).
  • Increasing access to travel outside our borders for study, research, and cultural exchange.
  • Encouragement of travelers and visitors to share their international perspectives with Wyoming learners.
  • Increasing individuals’ access to information, culture, and community connection by supporting the continuing growth of Wyoming Public Media, the third-largest radio network in the United States.
  • The building and maintaining of the technological and human infrastructure that these endeavors require.

Our Successes:

"We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Our past funding successes have included these programs:

  • The Edelweiss Fund
  • Edelweiss - Wyoming Women's Foundation Endowment
  • Myra Fox Skelton Scholars Program
  • UW at Casper Student Leadership Scholarship
  • UW at Casper Student Emergency Fund
  • McMurry Technical Education Scholarship
  • Zimmerman Secondary Science Scholarship
  • Casper-Star Tribune Journalism Award
  • Community Service Education Enrichment Scholarship for Kids
  • Support from First Interstate Bank, Wyoming Community Foundation, Rocky Mountain Power, the Paul Stock Foundation, and the Sue Jorgensen Memorial
  • Approximately 62,000 individual citizens each week listen to WPR, or roughly one out of every three adults within the coverage area. Listeners spend on average nine hours each week listening to WPR.

These programs promote community leadership opportunities and provide much-need financial support to students whose aspirations are narrowed only by their personal financial limitations.
