Elluminate / ClassLive Support
Web conferencing is a distance learning and communication technology that enables a group of people, at their own computers, to conduct a real-time meeting or class, over the Internet. UW has licensed Elluminate web conferencing technology, which gives any authorized UW user (i.e., anyone with a UWYO network account) access to this technology. An Elluminate web conference can include two-way audio among participants, a presentation screen for PowerPoint and other text or media presentations, an interactive whiteboard, application sharing, directed tours of web sites, and more.
Elluminate web conferencing is additionally available for outreach classes from within Online UW or eCompanion course shells. Inside the online course shell, the feature is called ClassLive, "powered by Elluminate."
Elluminate and ClassLive bring to your classes or meetings the ability to discuss and present without everyone having to be in the same location. Each participant, at his or her own computer, has a front-row seat to the presentation. Conversation and discussion in the online meeting is conducted through VoIP (Voice over IP) technology (real time audio communication through the computer). Participation in conversation is best through a microphone headset, or at least headphones or ear buds. If participants are not equipped with a microphone, Elluminate includes an online chat window in which participants can type in questions or comments.
ClassLive or Elluminate?
When to use ClassLive Pro and when to use Elluminate will be determined by the purpose of your web conference. They are the same web conferencing technology, available in two different environments.
ClassLive
If you are using web conferencing with your
Outreach supported class, ClassLive is recommended. ClassLive
is an integral part of all Online UW classes and Outreach-supported
eCompanions. Scheduling sessions and inviting participants is
simplified. You and your students have access to ClassLive anytime
from within your Online UW or eCompanion-supported Outreach class. You
only need to notify your students through email and/or course home
announcements when to show up in the course’s ClassLive “meeting room.” The First Time Users page provides directions for accessing ClassLive. Either take
directions from there to include in your invitations, or direct your
students to that page.
Including guest
speakers in a ClassLive session is an excellent use of this
accessible technology. However, your guest will need to be enrolled into
your Online UW or eCompanion class, where they will access the class in
the same way you and your students will. Send to Larry Jansen or Jeff Miller your request to enroll a guest in your class.
Elluminate
If your web conference includes a group
outside of Outreach-supported classes, Elluminate is your choice.
Elluminate web conferencing is an excellent option for training,
meetings, demonstrations, or any program with an audience distributed
across campus, across the state, or around the globe.
Web conference organizers can schedule Elluminate sessions through UW’s Elluminate Manager
site. You will need to get an Elluminate Manager account to schedule
Elluminate sessions. Directions for getting an account, accessing the
Elluminate Manager site, and scheduling an Elluminate web conference,
are available at IT’s Elluminate at UW site.
