Alumni News March 2013

Tricia Oborny Sanders (Pharm.D. ’04) lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is a Clinical Pharmacist for Intermountain Healthcare – Riverton Hospital. Tricia had a baby boy October 5, 2012. She writes, “Little Ollie Sanders weighed in at 4 pounds 11 ounces, was 17.5 inches in length, and the whole family is doing great!”

 

Christi Swaby (Pharm.D. '11) and Cody Plaisted (Pharm.D. '11) were commissioned as officers in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) on March 1.Christi Swaby (Pharm.D. '11) and Cody Plaisted (Pharm.D. '11) were commissioned as officers in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) on March 1. Lieutenant Swaby's current duty station is with the Rapid City Public Health Service (PHS) Indian Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota. Lieutenant Plaisted also works with the Indian Health Service, more specifically with Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation at Sacred Peaks Health Center in Flagstaff, Arizona. Kenneth Witzeling Named 2012 Outstanding Alumnus

Kenneth F. Witzeling (B.S.P. ‘51), from Powell, Wyoming, is the 2012 UW School of Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus. He is past president of the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and the Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy and is a member of the School of Pharmacy Advisory Committee. Witzeling will be recognized during the College of Health Sciences alumni reception during Homecoming in October.Kenneth F. Alumni Ken Witzeling, Ted Hoy, Erambo Ayokosok, P1 Chaundra Sewell (star of the UW Women’s Basketball team) and Associate Dean Linda Martin are featured in the "Prescribing Success" article in the current issue of UWyo Magazine. At left, alumnus Erambo Ayokosok (Pharm.D. '10) is a pharmacist at Safeway Pharmacy in Laramie, Wyo.

Tonja Woods, Pharm.D.('02), R.Ph., has received the 2012 Bowl of Hygeia award for Wyoming for her outstanding record of community service. She received the award during the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in Sheridan June 21-24.

For his advocacy for the profession of pharmacy, Dean Winsch, Pharm.D., R.Ph., (B.S.P. '80), was recognized as the 2012 Wyoming Pharmacist of the Year.

For his advocacy for the profession of pharmacy, Dean Winsch, Pharm.D., R.Ph., (B.S.P. '80), was recognized as the 2012 Wyoming Pharmacist of the Year during the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in Sheridan in June.

Kirsi Ludwig, Pharm.D. '00, was named the 2012 Wyoming Health-System Pharmacist of the Year.

Kirsi Ludwig, Pharm.D. '00, was named the 2012 Wyoming Health-System Pharmacist of the Year during the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in Sheridan in June. Ludwig is the Pharmacy Manager at Sheridan Memorial Hospital and current president of WPhA.

Jill Van Cleave (Pharm.D. '06) received the Pharmacists Mutual Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award.

Jill Van Cleave (Pharm.D. '06) received the Pharmacists Mutual Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award during the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in June. The award is given for individual excellence and outstanding contributions to association activities and civic projects.

Dean John Vandel was recognized by WPhA and WSHP during the annual convention in June for his dedication and service to the profession of pharmacy.

During the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in Sheridan June 21–24, WPhA and WSHP recognized Dean John Vandel, R.Ph., (B.S.P. '57) for his dedication and service to the profession of pharmacy.

Alumnus Jay Truitt, Pharm. D. ('08), delivered a seminar on his research project and M.D.-Ph.D. education to a group of Pharm.D. and BMS. Ph.D. students and SOP faculty in September.

Alumnus Stephen Adams is the first UW School of Pharmacy graduate named an ASHP Fellow.

Alumnus Stephen Adams Named ASHP Fellow

Stephen Adams, Pharm.D. (B.S.P. ’80), is the first UW pharmacy graduate designated a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP.) Adams, who is currently assistant chief of inpatient pharmacy at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., is one of 30 pharmacists nationwide to be honored as 2012 ASHP Fellows. Garrett Needham (B.S.P. ‘93), with Albertsons/Osco in Cheyenne, Wyo., was named a UW School of Pharmacy Preceptor of the Year for 2012.

2012 Preceptors of the Year

Garrett Needham and David Sy have been selected as the 2012 Preceptors of the Year for their significant contributions to the education of UW School of Pharmacy students. The announcements were made at the Annual Honors and Awards banquet in April. (Read more)

Scot Silber

Scot Silber Named 2011 Outstanding Alumnus

Scot Silber (B.S. Pharmacy '82) has been named the UW School of Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus for 2011. Silber is the President and CEO of GreenValleyMed and NDC Pharmacy, both headquartered in Henderson, Nev., and of University Specialty Pharmacy in Commerce, Calif. He is also co-founder and chairman of the board of the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. (Read more)

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation recently announced that Mindy D. Smith (B.S. Pharmacy '98) was named the organization's new executive director. Smith brings passion, dedication and pharmacy association leadership experience to the organization. (Read more)

Alumnus Wendall Gaston Receives APhA's Hubert H. Humphrey Award

Alumnus Wendall F. Gaston (B.S.P. '76), is the 2011 recipient of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Hubert H. Humphrey Award. Gaston was selected in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the profession of pharmacy and passion for healthcare, politics, community and public service. (Read more)

Floyd and Iris Harnagel

Bi-Rite Owners Move on After 47 Years

Floyd and Iris Harnagel are moving on from a life spent in the pharmacy business. Even before owning and operating Bi-Rite Drug for 47 years, Floyd was a partner with B.T. McManus and Earl Carrico, who opened Casper's first Bi-Rite in Casper in the late 1940s.
