UW School of Pharmacy Honors 2014 Preceptors of the Year
May 3, 2014 — Alumni Natasha Gallizzi (Pharm.D. ’01) and Lee Smith (B.S.P. ’75) were selected as the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy 2014 Preceptors of the Year. Gallizzi and Smith were recognized at the Annual Honors and Awards Banquet for their significant contributions to the education of UW pharmacy students.
Weber Family Scholarship Helps Future Pharmacists
April 29, 2014 — The pharmaceutical industry gave so much to alumnus Allan Weber (BSP ’63) and his wife, Sharon, it was only natural of them to want to give something back. Using their estate, they will create the Allan E. and Sharon J. Weber Family Memorial Scholarship at the UW School of Pharmacy to help foster excellence and to provide financial support to students entering the program.
UW School of Pharmacy Alumna Sharon Durfee Elected BPS Chair for 2014
March 25, 2014 — University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy alumna Sharon M. Durfee (B.S.P. '76), R.Ph., BCNSP, was elected by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) to serve as the 2014 chair. Durfee is the director of Poudre Infusion Therapy, an infusion therapy company that is part of Columbine Health Systems in Fort Collins, Colorado.

UW Pharmacy Alumna Lori Allen Shares Career Insights about Compounding Pharmacy
March 18, 2014 — UW pharmacy alumna Lori Allen, R.Ph., (B.S.P. '91) shares career insights about her work in the unique specialty of compounding pharmacy for the benefit of current students and prospective students. Allen is the owner of Mixtures Pharmacy & Compounding Center, with two locations near Phoenix, Arizona.
Witzeling Scholarship Endowment will Benefit Pharmacy Students
Alumnus Kenneth Witzeling (BSP '51) and his wife, Elizabeth, from Powell, Wyoming, have donated his extensive coin collection to the University of Wyoming to create the Kenneth and Elizabeth Witzeling Pharmacy Scholarship endowment. Alumna Lindsey Poppe Named 2013 ASHP Best Practices Award Recipient
University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy alumna Lindsey Poppe, Pharm.D. ('09), M.S., BCPS, is one of the recipients of the Fifteenth Annual ASHP Best Practices Award in Health-System Pharmacy. She was honored at the 2013 Poster Reception December 8, 2013, during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida.
Ethics and Medical Mission Work Research Study Published
An article about ethics and medical mission work in Honduras, authored by recent UW School of Pharmacy graduates Juanita Bonner, AA, Pharm.D. ('13), R.Ph., and Jessica Hopper, Pharm.D. ('12), R.Ph., with Linda Gore Martin, Pharm.D., R.Ph., M.B.A., BCPS, Dean, School of Pharmacy, and Penelope Caldwell, CNM, DNP, Brigade Faculty Advisor, Assistant Lecturer, Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, was published in the October 2013 edition of a new open access journal titled Universal Journal of Public Health.
Richard Wilder Named UW School of Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus for 2013
Richard R. Wilder (B.S.P. '50) from Cody, Wyoming, has been named the UW School of Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus for 2013. He will be honored for his outstanding contributions and service to the profession of pharmacy during the College of Health Sciences award ceremony October 11. During his long and successful career, Wilder was active in numerous professional and civic organizations and he received the 1975 Bowl of Hygeia Award for Wyoming for his outstanding record of community service. Wilder and his wife, Marge, owned and operated Cody Drug for forty years.
UW School of Pharmacy alumni were honored for professional excellence during the Wyoming Pharmacy Association (WPhA) and the Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacy (WSHP) Annual Convention in Laramie in June. Those honored include Tim Seeley, Kay McManus, John Arross, Scot Schmidt, and Stevi Sy.
Jennifer Nevins (BSP '76) was chosen as President-elect for 2014-15 of the UW Alumni Association.
2013 AACP Annual Meeting
Meghan Jeffres (Pharm.D. '04) received the 2013 Innovations in Teaching Award at the AACP Annual Meeting for her project called "Gaming the System: Using Card Games to Facilitate Student Learning of Infectious Diseases and Cardiology." Jeffres is currently an associate professor of pharmacy practice at the Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy in Henderson, Nevada.
Shanna O’Connor (Pharm.D. '09) had two presentations at the 2013 AACP Annual Meeting. One special session was called "Rural Pharmacy Education: Past, Present and Future" and the other was a roundtable discussion titled "Seeing Scholarship and Collaboration Opportunities in Unique Ways but Everyday Places." O’Connor is currently an assistant professor and Kelley-Ross Faculty Fellow at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy.
Sarah Kerns Feddema Stephens (Pharm.D. '01) presented a poster titled, "A Practice Redesigned: A Shared Position for Acute Care Clinical Faculty." Stephens is an assistant professor (clinical) at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacotherapy.
ASHP House of Delegates
University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy alumni were a significant power at the recent American Society of Health-System Pharmacists' House of Delegates (161 state delegates for this 43,000 member organization). Linda Gore Martin (BSP '75), Dean of the School, and Kirsi Ludwig (Pharm.D. '00) represented Wyoming; Stephen Adams (BSP '80) represented New Mexico; and Kerry (Kelly) Haney (BSP '98) and Melanie (Mentock) Townsend (Pharm.D. '04) represented Montana. Kara Kent (Pharm.D. '12) presented her residency project at the poster session and Lindsay Poppe (Pharm.D. '09) also presented a poster.
The School of Pharmacy class of 2013 received their Doctor of Pharmacy degrees during the UW College of Health Sciences commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 11. Many graduates shared their future plans which include residencies, hospital, retail, and community pharmacy, and spending time with family.

KUNA, Id. (April 14, 2013 ― Custom Rx Pharmacy in Kuna, Idaho, owned by alumnus Travis Walthall, R.Ph. (B.S.P. '98) and his wife Tina, was recently accredited by the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB). The accreditation is awarded in recognition of the pharmacy’s commitment to meeting and/or exceeding national quality standards. As such, they are currently the only nationally accredited compounding pharmacy in the Treasure Valley of Idaho and the second in the state.
BETHESDA, Md. (May 17, 2013) ― John C. Darnell, Pharm.D., has been awarded a 2012-2013 ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Resident Practice-Based Research Grant. Dr. Darnell is a PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Resident at Kaiser Permanente in Denver. Dr. Darnell is a graduate of the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy.
Tricia Oborny Sanders (Pharm.D. ’04) lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is a Clinical Pharmacist for Intermountain Healthcare – Riverton Hospital. Tricia had a baby boy October 5, 2012. She writes, “Little Ollie Sanders weighed in at 4 pounds 11 ounces, was 17.5 inches in length, and the whole family is doing great!”
Christi Swaby (Pharm.D. '11) and Cody Plaisted (Pharm.D. '11) were commissioned as officers in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) on March 1. Lieutenant Swaby's current duty station is with the Rapid City Public Health Service (PHS) Indian Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota. Lieutenant Plaisted also works with the Indian Health Service, more specifically with Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation at Sacred Peaks Health Center in Flagstaff, Arizona. (Read more)

Kenneth F. Witzeling (B.S.P. ‘51) from Powell, Wyoming, is the 2012 UW School of Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus. He is past president of the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and the Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy and is a member of the School of Pharmacy Advisory Committee. Witzeling was recognized during the College of Health Sciences Outstanding Alumni Reception during UW Homecoming in October.

Tonja Woods, Pharm.D.('02), R.Ph., has received the 2012 Bowl of Hygeia award for Wyoming for her outstanding record of community service. She received the award during the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in Sheridan June 21-24.
For his advocacy for the profession of pharmacy, Dean Winsch, Pharm.D., R.Ph., (B.S.P. '80), was recognized as the 2012 Wyoming Pharmacist of the Year during the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in Sheridan in June.
Kirsi Ludwig, Pharm.D. '00, was named the 2012 Wyoming Health-System Pharmacist of the Year during the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in Sheridan in June. Ludwig is the Pharmacy Manager at Sheridan Memorial Hospital and current president of WPhA.
Jill Van Cleave (Pharm.D. '06) received the Pharmacists Mutual Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award during the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in June. The award is given for individual excellence and outstanding contributions to association activities and civic projects.
During the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Wyoming Society of Health-System Pharmacists Annual Convention in Sheridan June 21–24, WPhA and WSHP recognized Dean John Vandel, R.Ph., (B.S.P. '57) for his dedication and service to the profession of pharmacy.
Alumnus Jay Truitt, Pharm. D. ('08), delivered a seminar on his research project and M.D./Ph.D. education to a group of Pharm.D. and BMS Ph.D. students and SOP faculty in September.
Alumnus Stephen Adams Named ASHP Fellow
Stephen Adams, Pharm.D. (B.S.P. ’80), is the first UW pharmacy graduate designated a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP.) Adams, who is currently assistant chief of inpatient pharmacy at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., is one of 30 pharmacists nationwide to be honored as 2012 ASHP Fellows. Garrett Needham and David Sy have been selected as the 2012 Preceptors of the Year for their significant contributions to the education of UW School of Pharmacy students. The announcements were made at the Annual Honors and Awards banquet in April. (Read more)
Scot Silber Named 2011 Outstanding Alumnus
Scot Silber (B.S. Pharmacy '82) has been named the UW School of Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus for 2011. Silber is the President and CEO of GreenValleyMed and NDC Pharmacy, both headquartered in Henderson, Nev., and of University Specialty Pharmacy in Commerce, Calif. He is also co-founder and chairman of the board of the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. (Read more)
Mindy Smith Named APhA Foundation Executive Director
The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation recently announced that Mindy D. Smith (B.S. Pharmacy '98) was named the organization's new executive director. Smith brings passion, dedication and pharmacy association leadership experience to the organization. (Read more)
Alumnus Wendall Gaston Receives APhA's Hubert H. Humphrey Award
Alumnus Wendall F. Gaston (B.S.P. '76), is the 2011 recipient of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Hubert H. Humphrey Award. Gaston was selected in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the profession of pharmacy and passion for healthcare, politics, community and public service. (Read more)
Bi-Rite Owners Move on After 47 Years
Floyd and Iris Harnagel are moving on from a life spent in the pharmacy business. Even before owning and operating Bi-Rite Drug for 47 years, Floyd was a partner with B.T. McManus and Earl Carrico, who opened Casper's first Bi-Rite in Casper in the late 1940s.
