Pam Darrow

Pharm.D. Candidate, Class of 2013

Education History:

I graduated from Powell High School in 2007. I began college at the University of Wyoming in the fall of 2007 where I completed two years of pre-pharmacy undergraduate coursework prior to being accepted to the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy.

What inspired you to become a pharmacist?

My initial inspiration to become a pharmacist was that my late grandfather was a pharmacist and had owned and operated his own store for over 30 years.

Why did you want to attend the UW School of Pharmacy?

I was initially intrigued by the University of Wyoming because it had my program of interest -- Pharmacy, and allowed for me to spend the next chapter of my life in an area where I was able to still partake in the outdoor activities I love like cross-country skiing, hiking, kayaking, camping, etc.

Research Opportunities:

I entered Pharmacy School with no intention of participating in any area of research, but the more I learned about my future career as a pharmacist and the impact we as pharmacists can have on patient care, the more I understood the necessity of research within our field. I participated on a medical mission to Agua Salada, Honduras, where I and a fellow pharmacy student collected data on the diseases being treated in this area and the medication available to treat each diagnosis. The intention of this data is to help create a drug formulary for the clinic being built by the University of Wyoming in Agua Salada. This project has helped me to understand the real life impact and need for research within the pharmacy profession as well as has inspired me to take on similar projects in my future.

Student Activities:

The University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy provides excellent opportunities to become involved in your education outside of the classroom. I took advantage of many of these opportunities by becoming involved in various pharmacy student organizations. Through my involvement I had the opportunity to build relations with my fellow peers, network with pharmacists throughout the state and country, and attend national meetings in San Francisco, Nashville, and Philadelphia. Student organizations have also provided me with the opportunity to gain leadership experience, and utilize my skills and knowledge of pharmacy to provide health and wellness to the Laramie community through various events as well as promote our profession. From each of these experiences I have gained valuable insight and knowledge into different career opportunities while enhancing my curriculum vitae and overall educational experience.

Experiences while at UW and the School of Pharmacy:

My overall experience here at the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy was more fulfilling than I could have ever dreamt it would be. I have made lifelong friends, been a part of endless opportunities that will enhance my future career, and honestly enjoyed the whole experience. I feel confident in my education and the knowledge gained and am excited about my future as a Pharmacist!

Future Goals:

Upon graduation from Pharmacy School I plan on completing a PGY1 residency to become a Clinical Pharmacist in the Mountain West.

"Having had the opportunity to tour a few other campuses in the northwest, my tour at the University of Wyoming was by far the most welcoming and inspiring; I immediately felt like I belonged here. My campus visit meeting with a pharmacy advisor was to this day one of the most uplifting and motivational moments in my college career. I knew then my search was over."

About the UW School of Pharmacy

Pam Darrow
"I feel that one of the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy’s biggest perks is its small class size. The small class size allows for students to really get to know their professors and vice versa. This creates a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere better open to communication and success. I always tell incoming students that the faculty and staff at the school truly care about you and want you to succeed which is evident by their involvement in our education and extracurricular activities."
