Philosophy 3000

Philosophy & Film

Instructor: Franz-Peter Griesmaier
Delivery Method: Traditional In-Person
Times: W 3:10p - 5:40p

Is film an artform in it's own right? What is the nature of film? Do all films have something like an author, and if so, who is it - the director, the editor, or perhaps the producer? Why do we sometimes care deeply about a character in a film, a character that doesn't actually exist? How do horror films work? What does it mean for a film to engage in social criticism? Is all film political? And is it possible to learn from film? These are some of the questions guiding our discussion, which is accompanied by the screening of a number of films.
