Learn about the Middle East, a part of the world always in the news! This course surveys the Middle East from 1500 to the present. Emphasizes the demise of the Ottoman Empire, the rise of domination by European colonial powers, transformations in political, social, religious and cultural life, the rose of the nationalist movements, the influence of oil, the growth of Islamist political groups, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and contemporary trends in Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the region.
