Forage Identification: Winter pea

Winter pea or Austrian winter pea (Pisum sativum L.)

Adaptation: 
Very winter hardy. Well drained loam and sandy loam soil. Intolerant of highly acid soils.

Growth Habitat:
Viney winter annual with stems 2 to 4 feet long.

Plant Characteristics: 
Alternate leaflets with toothed margins. Flowers are pink, purple or white. 

Seed Characteristics:
Round shape. Yellow-greenish color.

Winter pea seeds

Important Identifying Characteristics:
Viney stems two to four feet long.

Primary Uses:
Silage and green manure. High nutritive quality.
