The Department of Political Science announces a $1,000 scholarship honoring Professor Michael J. Horan to be awarded for the 2013-2014 academic year to a student with an interest in American public law. The recipient will be:

The Horan Scholarship is financed by the Michael and Ann Horan Endowment for Student Success, a fund established by former students of Professor Horan and friends of the Political Science Department, in honor of one of the preeminent teachers in the history of the University of Wyoming.
The scholarship recipient will be recognized at the Political Science Department Awards Banquet held late in the Spring.
Deadline is February 1, 2013 and applications must be submitted with the required supporting materials to the Political Science Department in A & S Room 136 or via e-mail to pols.info@uwyo.edu.
Due to the generosity of the Simpson Fund, established in honor of former Wyoming Governor Milward Simpson to foster the study of political science, the department is able to offer several student awards. They include the following:
1. A Milward Simpson Scholarship awarded to an outstanding junior for use during his/her senior year. The scholarship is in the amount of resident tuition for two semesters. Application Form
2. One award for the Outstanding Graduate Paper written during the 2012 calendar year (spring, summer or fall term). Application Form
3. One award for the Outstanding Undergraduate Paper written for a 3000-level or 4000-level Political Science course during the 2012 calendar year (spring, summer or fall term). Application Form
The award recipients will be recognized at the Political Science Department Awards Banquet held late in the Spring.

The Fred Homer Prize is bestowed to a student, undergraduate or graduate, at the University of Wyoming for exceptional performance on a paper relating to political philosophy in its applications to the life well led, government, society, and citizenship written during the 2012 calendar year (spring, summer or fall term). Papers considered for the Fred Homer Prize may originate in courses in Political Science, American Studies, Philosophy, UW Honors Program or other appropriate disciplines. Master's theses or other capstone projects in a Master's program in Political Science, American Studies, Philosophy or other appropriate disciplines as well as original research projects conducted for the Fred Homer Prize will also be considered.

The Political Science Department also offers the Louis Leichtweis Scholarship. This scholarship is available to juniors in political science. The scholarship amount varies but usually is at least $1,000. In order to be considered for this scholarship the student will need to prepare a short essay, maximum length 3 pages, explaining how the student's studies have helped in the understanding and possible contribution to the peaceful management and resolution of international conflicts.

The Philo S. Bennett Prize is awarded to a junior, senior or graduate student at the University of Wyoming for the best essay discussing the principles of free government written during the 2012 calendar year (spring, summer or fall term). Papers considered can be written for courses in American Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, UW Honors Program or other appropriate disciplines; for Master's theses or other capstone projects in a graduate program in American Studies, Philosophy, Political Science or other appropriate disciplines; or as original research programs conducted for the Philo S. Bennett Prize. The prize is supported by an endowment created by William Jennings Bryan as executer of the estate of Philo S. Bennett, a Connecticut businessman.

An application or nomination should be submitted to the Political Science Department in Room 136 of the Arts and Science Building. The winner of the competition will receive a cash award and will be honored at the annual Political Science Awards Banquet held late in the spring.
