Denim Day: Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Initiative

April 25, 2017

Dear students, faculty and staff:

We have another opportunity as a community to express our support for a safer campus and improved sexual assault prevention and response efforts.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 26, is celebrated nationally as Denim Day. Starting in 1999, Denim Day began as a response to the Italian Supreme Court’s ruling that a woman could not be raped if she was wearing tight jeans during an assault. We know that sexual assault is never justified, regardless of what a person may be wearing.

I invite all members of the community to participate in Denim Day tomorrow by wearing denim to work and class to demonstrate your support of our sexual violence prevention efforts.

Denim Day is traditionally paired with an opportunity to financially support efforts to improve sexual assault programs. While it’s not required, I would encourage you to consider participating in a crowdfunding effort to support the Survivor’s Emergency Fund. We intend for the fund to be active starting in the fall 2017 semester, providing financial support to student survivors of sexual violence. We encourage you to donate what you can to the fund -- even small donations can have a large impact!

Please stop by the Denim Day campaign table in front of Ross Hall from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on April 26. You can pick up a sticker and denim ribbon, and get more information on prevention efforts at UW.

I’m proud to share that UW’s fraternity and sorority community will show their support by wearing denim at their annual Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards Wednesday.

As we approach the end of the semester, I encourage all members of our university community to continue to respect one another and support survivors of sexual violence. Our work does not end with this year. UW’s No More campaign team will continue to meet over the summer to plan the next steps of this important initiative.
