UW Profiles

How Engineering Alumnus Benjamin Vetter Goes for Gold

By Micaela Myers

“I chose UW because of the great things I heard about the College of Engineering and Applied Science along with the affordability of the education. I’m a high school graduate from a Wyoming high school, and the Hathaway Scholarship was something that I felt couldn’t be passed up.”

“I couldn’t have asked for a better student experience than what I received at UW. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UW is second to none, and that is due to the faculty really caring about the students. There were countless times as a student I knocked on a faculty member’s door outside of their office hours, and they never hesitated to drop whatever was on their agenda to help answer my questions. They were always very professional and treated me as a professional even while I was a student. The one-on-one communication the faculty gives to each student at UW is by far their greatest asset.”

“During my time at UW, I was a member of Tau Beta Pi (engineering honor’s society) where I also was a tutor, and I also was a tutor for the athletics department for a few years. The last two years I was very honored to be one of two student representatives on the UW Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board. A few of my student experience highlights at UW included serving on that board and the countless UW sporting events that I was lucky enough to be a part of, including rushing the A-A basketball court after the UW men’s basketball team upset then nationally ranked Colorado.”

“While job searching my last semester of college, a friend of mine thought I should look into Bobcat Co. I researched the company and was pleased to see they held the same Midwestern beliefs and values I was brought up with in Wyoming. I contacted the company and sent them my resume. Within the span of four days they conducted a phone interview with me, flew me up to Bismarck, N.D., for an in-person interview and tour of the facilities, and offered me a design engineering position. In my current role, I am responsible for creating and maintaining engineered designs as part of the Loader New Product Development group.

“The highlights of my job are getting the opportunity to first-hand experience new ideas and follow those ideas through in the best way possible to a finished product for the customer to use. Knowing that I directly affect the customer is very rewarding and yet challenging at times, in that my ideas and designs will be out there for the world to see. Bobcat Co. just recently moved into the Bobcat Acceleration Center, which is a state-of-the-art building based on innovation and technology in Bismarck, so it is a very exciting time here at Bobcat. My career goals are that I can be a source of knowledge and an expert for Bobcat on new loader designs.

“UW helped prepare me for this job by always pushing me to reach my full potential, not only in academics, but life in general. The Department of Mechanical Engineering based my academics around the basic mechanical engineering principles and taught me to strive to be not only proficient in these principles, but exceptional in these principles. Also, my studies at UW were not solely based on textbooks, but on real-world, real-life principles and experience. The yearlong senior design course that I was required to complete prepared me for this job in teaching me the wide variety of jobs I would be tasked with in a day-to-day work setting and completing them in an ethical, professional and proficient manner.”

One of the 10 Cowboy Ethics adopted by UW is “Take pride in your work.” Benjamin Vetter demonstrates this principle with his success at school and in his new career.
