Path to Success

Path to Success

Alumnus Isaac Hayward discovered a new path at UW and is now on his way to medical school.

By Micaela Myers

UW Alumni Isaac HaywardIsaac Hayward of Laramie, Wyo., first came to the University of Wyoming to play Cowboys football. But as with many college students, finding his path and his life’s passions took a few turns.

“The direction you think your life should take is not always the path you go down,” Hayward says. “So just embrace what comes and keep moving forward.

“After my first season, I decided football was not for me and left the team to focus on academics and other passions,” he continues.

Hayward graduated in May 2014 with honors in physiology and began applying to medical schools after graduation. “The physiology program at UW is very rigorous and has done a tremendous job preparing me for entering the medical field,” he says. “Also, UW does a great job at creating well-rounded graduates.”

Part of what helped Hayward become one of those well-rounded graduates was his extra-curricular involvements. “I competed in numerous intramural sports, and I was an ambassador for the physiology department as well as a tutor for Human Systems Physiology,” he says. “I studied abroad during the 2013 summer in Cameroon, where I volunteered at an orphanage teaching math, English and soccer to the kids. I also conducted research in a physiology lab for two years under the supervision of Assistant Professor Brian Cherrington with funding through an INBRE research fellowship.

“Working in Professor Cherrington’s lab and my time abroad were some of the best experiences while I was a student at UW,” he adds.

Hayward also coached Laramie High School junior varsity soccer during his time at UW and coached soccer for the Special Olympics.

He encourages incoming students to use the many resources at their disposal. “I would tell students to never be afraid to ask for help,” Hayward says. “People around UW are very interested in student success—thus, they are very willing to either help out or at least point students in the proper direction.”

Developing relationships with professors helped Hayward achieve his goals. “My profound drive to learn resulted in strong relationships with several faculty members who adopted me as mentors and laboratory supervisors,” he says.

Hayward’s hard work inside and outside the classroom earned him a spot as a 2014 Tobin Memorial Award finalist, an award that honors top graduating men.

One of the 10 Cowboy Ethics adopted by UW is “Ride for the brand.” Alumnus Isaac Hayward demonstrates this principle with his volunteer work, academic success and plans to pursue medical school.
