Derby Days

Derby Days: Students Giving Back

University of Wyoming students put in more than 185,000 volunteer hours every year with local nonprofits, faith-based groups and through UW-sponsored activities, including service learning trips, fraternities and sororities, recognized student organizations, residence life and several annual service days.

Derby Day One such event is the annual Sigma Chi Derby Days, which is hosted by the UW Chapter of Sigma Chi to raise money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). HCI operates a research hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is a not-for-profit institution with a mission to understand cancer from its beginnings, to use that knowledge in the creation and improvement of cancer treatments, to relieve the suffering of cancer patients, and to provide education about cancer risk, prevention, and care.

The Derby Days fundraiser will host many events April 12 through April 18, culminating in a Duck Derby at the Laramie River. The purchaser of the winning duck will win a Kindle Fire HD. Every purchased duck increases your chances to win.

Since its inception, the International Sigma Chi Fraternity has donated more than $2 million to charities both locally and nationally. The UW Chapter of Sigma Chi has been on campus for 85 years, and members are involved with many different campus and community groups and activities.

Sigma Chi Derby Days schedule of events:

April 12: Opening dinner with all team participants
April 14: Elk burger BBQ, $5 entrance fee at Sigma Chi
April 16: Sigma Chi date and skill auction
April 18: Duck Derby at noon on the Laramie River; celebration at 8 p.m. at Sigma Chi
