Safe Treat Halloween

The Wyoming Union teams up with student groups to welcome Laramie children to the campus for safe trick-or-treating and fun activities.

By Micaela Myers

Each Halloween, thousands of trick-or-treaters arrive at the Wyoming Union in costume to enjoy safe trick-or-treating, games and more, hosted by the Union and the students of the University of Wyoming.

“Safe Treat is an event that we have done for decades,” says Ryan Dinneen O'Neil, special events coordinator for the Wyoming Union. “We collaborate with the recognized student organizations on campus to provide a safe trick-or-treating environment for children in the Laramie community. We usually have about 50 to 60 student organizations that participate. They decorate their tables, and they come in costumes. They have games or activities—they usually create something very interactive and fun. It’s a great way to involve the student side of campus and reach out to the Laramie community. It’s fun to have an event that brings the community into the Union. We usually have about 3,000 to 3,500 trick-or-treaters. It’s a really busy two hour-period!”

The 2014 event takes place Halloween night, Oct. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. Children can look forward to free candy, as well as activities such as the annual cake walk. Recent years also have included face painting, “Despicable Me” Minion bowling, fishing for treats, ball toss and wheel spin games. The Union occupants and departments decorate their offices, and often UW sororities and fraternities, as well as Residence Life and Dining Services, also participate with activities or a haunted house that children can visit after the Union trick-or-treating.

As a member of the American Marketing Association, Global Business Club, Associated Students of UW (ASUW) Student Senate and Alpha Kappa Psi, senior Mitchell Nedved of Gillette, Wyo., has been involved with Safe Treat for three years and plans to participate this year as well.

“Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays for so many reasons: free candy, being able to dress up as anything you want, seeing everyone happy and seeing others dress up,” says Nedved, who is majoring in business economics and finance with a banking and financial services minor. “Safe Treat provides a safe, fun and consolidated way for people to come out and experience Halloween.

“I owe so much to the University of Wyoming because it has done so much for my personal, professional and educational development,” he continues. “Safe Treat gives back to the community that so graciously hosts the university in a fun way that college students really get behind. Safe Treat brings people together, inspires organizations to go above and beyond, and provides a true service to the Laramie community. Without hesitation, I can say that it is one of my most fond memories at UW to date, and I can't wait to participate again this year.”
