Giving Back

UW students volunteer thousands of hours each year in service to communities in Wyoming and throughout the world.

By Micaela Myers

Every year, thousands of University of Wyoming students put in more than 185,000 volunteer hours with local nonprofits, faith-based groups and through UW-sponsored activities, including service learning trips, fraternities and sororities, recognized student organizations, residence life and several annual service days.

“This generation is incredibly motivated and passionate about people, giving back and making a difference,” say Erin Olsen, Wyoming Union assistant director for the Service, Leadership and Community Engagement (SLCE) program.

“When I came to UW, I was overwhelmed by the abundance of opportunities,” says Kourtney Puckett, a junior majoring in physiology from Sheridan, Wyo. “I’ve traveled to Guatemala through the SLCE office to serve the youth in La Antigua, helped build a soup kitchen in Matelot, Trinidad, traveled to Poland to learn about the Holocaust and volunteer at Auschwitz, and this winter break I served youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland.” Puckett also volunteers locally at the Laramie Soup Kitchen, through the student groups she belongs to and during the annual service days.

“Something that’s neat is not just the number of opportunities at UW but how accessible they are to students,” says Sagan Hunsaker, alternative breaks coordinator for the SLCE office. “The students I work with have a strong sense of community—a sense that we’re all connected, and there’s a bigger purpose for all of us working together.”
