Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native Art Howe played for three major-league
baseball teams during his career, Pittsburgh, Houston, and St. Louis. He
then became an MLB manager, managing the Houston Astros from 1989 to
1993 and the Oakland A's from 1996 to 2002.
He was named the 17th manager in New York Mets history on October 28, 2002.
Howe has been just as successful off the field. In honor of their
volunteerism, the Howe family received accolades from a Bay
Area, California, publisher, winning Diablo
magazine's "Threads of Hope Award" in 2002. They were also honored for
their work with the Special Olympics and the Student Action for
Encouraging Respect.
Howe is currently a bench coach for the Texas Rangers and resides in Houston.
