In the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, eight University of Wyoming track athletes died in a traffic accident 17 miles south of Laramie. It is a loss still shared by family, friends and the entire UW community 10 years later.
Justin M. Lambert-Belanger, Timmins, Ontario; Cody B. Brown, Hudson, Colo.; Kyle N. Johnson, Riverton, Wyo.; Joshua D. Jones, Salem, Ore.; Morgan J. McLeland, Gillette, Wyo.; Kevin L. Salverson, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Nicholas J. Schabron, Laramie, Wyo.; and Shane E. Shatto, Douglas, Wyo., were remembered days later in a community memorial service at the Arena-Auditorium.
A year later, a memorial garden was dedicated on the south side of the UW Athletics Complex.
