Ideal for early childhood care and education professional and mental health professionals looking to strengthen their knowledge and skills in promoting healthy social-emotional development, school readiness, and resolving early childhood concerns. Although some important theories and principles are explored, the emphasis will be on pragmatic application - on how you can support children and their caregivers to be successful and well.
As a complete online course, it's designed to fit a busy professional's schedule. The class consists of eight 2-week modules that students complete any time within each two-week window. Each module includes some reading, video power-point presentation, other video, and additional materials to help you strengthen your work with young children and their caregivers. Assignments focus on reading and reflecting, participating in threaded discussions, and application.

Michael Morgan, Ph.D., LMFT is an Associate Professor in Counselor Education at the University of Wyoming. He's worked with children in community agencies and schools. He's a fellow of the UMASS Boston INfant-Parent Mental Health Post-Graduate Certificate Program, and coordinates Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health training at UW.

Students will need access to a reliable computer and internet connection. A broadband internet connection and a basic web-camera are recommended, but not required.
Any professional who works with young children and their caregivers could apply the skills and knowledge from this course to improve the services they provide. The course will be particularly helpful for child care providers, pre-school instructors, and mental health professionals. However, other professionals who support children and caregivers could also benefit. This might include public health nurses, pediatricians, guardians-ad-litem and para-professionals.
Department approval is required for this course, and can be obtained by sending an email to Dr. Morgan at morganm@uwyo.edu. Briefly describe your education and training related to early childhood or mental health, and your experience in working with young children. The course is designed for students who have a degree in the early childhood or mental health fields, and who have experience working with young children, but we will consider all who are interested and qualified.
