The following is the letter from the chair that appeared in the Fall 2005 edition of Psychology Now

Letter from the Chair
Holiday Greetings to everyone!

It's been a while since we've published a newsletter and for that I apologize. To make up for our silence, we'll try to pack more news and pictures into this edition of the newsletter.

We have been doing lots of things and our faculty continue to be recognized for their accomplishments. I want to add a couple of bragging points. Two of our faculty, Eric Dearing and Scott Freng, received Extraordinary Merit Awards (Eric for research and Scott for teaching). Eric and Scott will have a nice Christmas bonus thanks to the anonymous donor who set up the awards in the A&S College. On Monday, November 28th, Marty Bourgeois was interviewed on NPR's All Things Considered. Marty recently received a National Science Foundation Grant with colleagues in Rochester and Australia to study Rumors. NPR interviewed him about the work and have even posted a link on their website where people can post their rumors for study. If any of you would like to look at the website or post a rumor you've heard you can go to: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5029923.

And it turns out that some of our faculty have talents outside the research lab and classroom. Clinical psychologist, Brett Deacon, is an avid photographer. The newly remodeled Health Sciences building features many of Brett's works, and a local store has a section that showcases his photos.

Turning to alumni news, this year our department plans to nominate Ed Wise (Ph.D. 1980) for the A&S Outstanding Alumni Award. See our Alumni News to find out more about Dr. Wise and his award from the American Psychological Association. Monica McCoy (Ph.D. 1997) is taking a sabbatical from her job at Converse College, but will be teaching in Iceland in the spring. She's also working on a textbook.

For those of you who are out of touch with Wyoming news, the state budget has a surplus of over 1 billion dollars. That's good news for the state but is also good news for the university. There are plans to request funds for the library, instructional equipment, more faculty, and much more. Hopefully our department with its approximately 400 majors will be able to benefit from this windfall. Our biggest hope is to be able to increase the size of our faculty. Right now we have 14 people but our goal is for the department to have at least 17 faculty. That way we can reduce the size of our classes and give students more opportunity to have small class/ high interaction experiences. We'll keep you posted on our progress

Hope you and your family had a safe and happy holiday. As always, we hope that you'll keep in touch so we can share your news with your former classmates and friends.

Dr. Narina L. Nunez
Professor and Chair
