The following is the letter from the chair that appeared in the Spring 2013 edition of Psychology Now

Letter from the Chair

We've had a busy few years here in the Psychology Department and we are way overdue for a newsletter. Inside you'll find stories detailing some of our new endeavors. For example, remember that old Psi Chi room on the first floor of the Biological Sciences building with the industrial tables and sagging second hand furniture? With the help of the Wilson Walthall Excellence Fund we remodeled that space.

We awarded our first three Downey Scholarship awards. This newsletter contains details about these amazing women and how they are continuing the legacy of our former faculty member, June Etta Downey.

In other news, our students continue to make us proud. In 2010-2011 we had 12 students complete their PhDs in Psychology! This was more PhDs than any program in the College of Arts & Sciences. We also continue to be the most popular major in the college. Last year we had a record 514 students majoring in Psychology. And our students are turning into excellent researchers. In 2011-2012 we sent 21 graduate students and 8 undergraduates to conferences to present their work with financial assistance from the Lillian Portenier fund.

Amidst all of the happy news, we are sorry to tell you about some recent losses. B. J. Fitzgerald taught Assessment in our Clinical PhD program. He will be remembered for holding students to high standards and pushing them to excel. Last year we also lost retired instructor Ed Chenoweth. Finally, we were saddened to hear of the death of Rhonda Reid. She completed our PhD program under the mentorship of Steve Bieber in 2000. We have added a special section to our newsletter to remember these wonderful psychologists.

We are fortunate that the Psychology Department continues to thrive. We continue to have the most popular major in the College of Arts & Sciences, serving a total of 510 majors, including 36 graduate students. A number of our faculty have been recognized with awards, including Karen Bartsch, who earned the prestigious distinction of being named a Fellow of the American Psychological Society. Matt Gray, who received the Chairman's Award of Excellence for service to Veterans. Scott Freng, who won an award for Extraordinary Merit in Teaching. Narina Nunez, a Top Ten Teacher. Melanie Stinson, who received the Extraordinary Merit in Advising award. Our faculty have also made national media appearances.

These are exciting times in the Psychology Department. If you have ideas about how you can contribute to or participate in the future of the department feel free to contact us. And please stop by when you visit Laramie. We'd love to hear from you!
Best regards,
