Name: Jordan Johnson

Hometown: Cheyenne, Wyo.

Class: Freshman

Major: Animal Science, Pre-Veterinary Medicine

Why did you choose UW for your education?: The University of Wyoming was always a second home for me. My mom, dad and stepdad are all alumni of the university. I grew up watching football games, wrestling duals and basketball games cheering on the Brown and Gold. I knew, even from a young age, that there was nowhere else that I wanted to go. Beyond that, I chose UW for the welcoming feel that it provided to me on every opportunity. Being in the College of Agriculture on campus, I have received welcoming smiles and hellos around every corner. That is something that is hard to come by in such a large-scale university, and truly makes UW stand out.

What do you hope to do after graduation?: Post-graduation, I plan on attending graduate school to get a degree in veterinary medicine.

What would you tell a prospective student who is considering attending UW?: The University of Wyoming is a very special university. We are a big-time university with a small-town university feel. It is a place that everyone finds a home at. Not only does UW have world-class facilities and classes, but we also have the best people. No matter where you go, you can always expect a friendly smile and wave. Cowboy values run deep through the university, and it shows. After just a short time on campus, I can honestly say that there is nowhere else I’d rather be.

What is your favorite part about UW?: The best part of UW and of Wyoming in general is the sense of pride that you experience. Wyoming only has one university, and the amount of dedication and support the state shows is overwhelming. At UW, everyone is a Wyoming Cowboy, whether you grew up in the heart of Chicago or a cow-calf operation in the middle of Kansas. To be called a Wyoming Cowboy seems arbitrary at first, but it truly is one of the greatest honors that I myself have had. The world needs more cowboys, and I cannot explain in words how amazing it is to be one.

Do you have a favorite spot on campus or in town?: They call Laramie “Laradise” for a reason. As a town it is chock full of friendly people, incredible food and unique shops, and it is hard to find just one thing to call my "favorite." However, if I was forced to choose, then I would have to pick J’s Prairie Rose, a breakfast and brunch establishment tucked into downtown Laramie. Its deceiving storefront hides behind it a hometown diner, which is a great place to get a homecooked, traditional American breakfast while catching up with friends.

What are some of your hobbies?: Before attending UW, my main hobbies included horseback riding, speech and debate, theatre, swing dancing and swimming. Since moving to Laramie, I have become involved in things that I never would’ve experienced. Things such as intermural flag football, the equestrian team and the various leadership councils have all expanded and grown my hobbies and interests. They are also good ways to meet and get to know new people.
