Name: Katie Couture

Hometown: Cody, Wyo.

Class: Freshman

Major: Nursing

Why did you choose UW for your education?: I chose the University of Wyoming to pursue my education for numerous reasons. One of my driving factors leading into my final decision to come to UW was the ability to be admitted as a freshman to the nursing program. Having a program that accepts freshman is rare to start with, but being one of the few students accepted pretty much sealed the deal on my decision. A few other factors contributing to my decision included the ability to stay in-state, while still having the opportunity to start a new life away from my hometown.

What do you hope to do after graduation?: After graduation I hope to find a place in the world, whether it is Wyoming or a new adventure, where I am able to settle down into a steady career in the field of nursing. I currently have an interest in either the obstetrics or pediatrics as I have a strong passion for children and infants, as well as a curiosity about maternity. There is the possibility of furthering my education as a nurse to be a nurse practitioner, but for now, I am focusing on this stage of life and being present in my now.

What would you tell a prospective student who is considering attending UW?: To the prospective in-state students, I would tell them not to discredit the university for being the stereotypical choice. To both in-state and out-of -state students, I want them to know there is so much UW has to offer and there truly is a place on campus for everyone. Whether your strong point is academics, athletics, arts or anything else, there is an opportunity for you. I would also tell any student considering UW to come visit, take a tour, talk to people on campus and give yourself an opportunity to meet the campus outside of the fliers and postcards coming to your door each week. For me, visiting campus gave me a whole new look at the place I plan to spend my next four years.

What is your favorite part about UW?: There are so many amazing parts about UW that it's impossible to choose one. A few of my favorites include the hundreds of hours of tutoring available for each subject, the amazing community feeling and last, but certainly not least, seeing a minimum of five dogs on campus daily. The community at the university is probably my favorite part, if I had to choose. Everyone here is focusing on their own program, so all of the "he said, she said, she did, he did" drama from high school is left in the dust. We come together as a community to support each other through the low points we are all bound to encounter, but we also come together to celebrate the high points we are all guaranteed to have. The tutoring on campus is so readily available I almost never have to worry about where I am going to get help-- online, in the basement of Washakie Center, the library, the STEM building and in specialized rooms for different classes. Another aspect I love about college and UW specifically is there is no shame in getting help, everyone does it as some point and it can be the difference between passing or failing a class. All of this is available at no cost to the student. As for seeing dogs on campus? I don’t think this needs explanation, it’s just great.

Do you have a favorite spot on campus or in town?: My favorite spot on campus is the southwest corner by the Aven Nelson Building with areas of green grass, large trees and flower beds. No matter what time of year this corner of campus is always pretty with blooming flowers in the spring and summer, colorful leaves in the fall and snow-covered trees in the winter. It is always relaxing to spend 10 minutes of your day walking and not worrying about homework, class, people or anything else.

What are some of your hobbies?: In college, there is not a lot of time for hobbies, but when I do have spare time away from doing homework and going to class, I enjoy being outside. Anything with fresh air is my cup of tea, ranging from camping to hunting to rock climbing to hiking to exploring and all of the other outdoor activities. I also love to read (one of the more underrated hobbies) but I can get sucked into a good book and find myself four hours later not knowing what year it is, which honestly can be a pretty good escape from the real world for a while. I also recently started running a blog! I do not have a consistent posting schedule, or one at all for that matter, but it also has been a fun stress-free way to share my experiences in a positive way as I venture into the adult world.
