Ecosystems Pic

The Quaternary Period includes a wide range of ecological changes ranging from the broad transformations of the Earth’s biosphere during ice ages to the rapid extinction of a wide range of large mammals, such as mammoths, about 13,000 years ago. Much can be learned about ecological processes and patterns by studying the fossil record of these ancient changes. We have projects spanning decades to millennia from the tropics to alpine tundra, which are examining problems such as how long-term droughts affect the occurrence of forest fire and the spread of invading species, why certain species exist in some mountain ranges and not others, and how marine kelp forests cycle nutrients.
