It may have taken generations to complete a soapstone bowl like the one below. Bowls were carved from soapstone boulders with either stone or metal tools, depending on whether they were made before or after European contact. The bowl shown below was made after contact with a metal hatchet. Tragically, the broken bowl below is believed to have been shot with a rifle in modern times. Note the smaller entrance hole and the larger exit hole. There are also other indications of more bullet holes in the bottom of the bowl.
