Summer Outdoor Experience|Outdoor Program

Frequently Asked Questions

How much experience do I need?

You don’t need any outdoor experience at all. Many of the participants have never been camping or canoeing before.

How physically fit do I need to be?

A good level of physical fitness is important. Canoeing and rafting require an adequate amount of upper-body strength and we will be lifting a lot of equipment into and out of the canoes. We'll also have opportunities to go for day hikes, though the length will be relatively short (a few miles).

When do we get back and where will we be dropped off?

We usually return by 5 p.m., but it largely depends on the river levels. The latest we have returned is 6 p.m. and the earliest was 4 p.m. We’ll return to Half Acre Gym, in the Union parking lot. Check out this map to find the parking lot. Half Acre is usually open until 8 p.m. in the summer.

Where can I park?

If you drove, the closest you can park for the duration of the SOE is Willett Drive, east of 15th St.

Where do we meet to depart?

We will meet in the Outdoor Program office (south lobby).

Where will we leave my extra stuff?

You can leave anything you don’t want to bring here in the OP office. We’ll keep it as safe as possible (the office is locked at night), though we can’t guarantee against theft. If you are concerned about bringing certain items, please leave them at home.

What equipment should I bring?

Please check out our equipment list for the canoeing/rafting trip, or this list for the rock climbing weekend trip. If you have specific questions, please call us!

Can I rent items that I don't have?

Absolutely. Actually it’s easier to rent from us than it is to haul your camping gear out, especially if you are flying in.

Can I stay in the residence halls on return?

Yes. Please fill out the second page of the equipment list file and send it in to us. You will get dinner the evening you return, and breakfast the next morning. Please be sure to check the times that Washakie Dining is open, as they have limited hours in the summer.
