The University of Wyoming was established in Laramie in 1886 as one of the 1862 Nation's land grant institutions and remains the only four-year and graduate degree granting educational institution in the State of Wyoming. UW's more than 3,000 faculty and staff are dedicated to providing quality instruction to students, conducting valuable programs of research, and serving Wyoming through education and cultural programs.

The University of Wyoming is governed by a bipartisan board of twelve trustees appointed by the governor with the consent of the Wyoming Senate. UW offers programs of study within seven accredited colleges: Agriculture & Natural Resources, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering & Applied Sciences, Health Sciences, and Law. Some degree programs are also offered through the UW Casper.  Enrollment at UW averages 13,200, including outreach enrollment.

UW received more than $95.8 million in grants and contracts for the 2016 fiscal year. These funds support fundamental and applied research; service to the state region, nation and internationally as well as instruction development and application. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has placed UW in high Doctoral Professional classification: Research Universities-high research activity.
The Laramie campus spreads over 785 acres and includes 90 major buildings housing instructional, research, and service facilities. The University Library system, a member of the Greater Western Library Alliance, includes several separate libraries including the William Robertson Coe Library which has cataloged collections which total over 1.3 million books, hundreds of academic article databases and 2.3 million eBooks.  Other resources include the American Heritage Center and nine other museums and collections.  More than 25 research centers and institutes are housed on campus with several others located throughout the state.
