Help! My Internet doesn't work
There are numerous reasons why your Internet will not work or has suddenly stopped working. In most cases it has something to do with a device in your room, either a router has just been installed, or the computer has been misconfigured. Both of these situations may cause your port to be disabled by issuing rogue IP address (please click here for more info).
In some cases the computer attached to that port gets a virus that tries to infect other machines on the network. Our network monitoring system will detect this and shutdown the port. If you suspect that this is the problem, please feel free to bring your computer down to the ResNet office and we will be happy to assist you.
Another reason that your Internet could have stopped working is the use of file sharing software. ResNet and UWIT does not ban the use of file sharing software since there are legitimate uses for the software. However if you are caught using the software to download illegally obtained copies of media and the Copyright holder issues a complaint ResNet and UWIT will shut down your port until the issue is resolved (please click here for me info).
Finally, sometimes the wiring or the port just stops working. If you suspect that bad wiring might be the cause of the problem please bring down your computer so we can make sure that it is not your computer that is the issue. If your computer works, we will conduct a port check to determine the source of the problem. If we find that the jack is bad we will put in a work order with Telecom to get the port repaired. Depending on Telecom's work load, repairs can happen the same day or take upwards of a week.
