Chemical Hygiene (Laboratory Safety)

Risk Management and Safety

Chemical Safety

OSHA, recognizing the unique characteristics of the laboratory workplace, has tailored a standard for occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals in laboratories. This standard is often referred to as the "Laboratory Standard". Under this standard, a laboratory is required to produce a Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) which addresses the specific hazards found in its location, and its approach to them.

A chemical hygiene plan (CHP) is a written program stating the policies, procedures, and responsibilities that serve to protect employees from the health hazards associated with the hazardous chemicals used in that particular workplace.  The plan will transmit information on the hazards of chemicals to their employees by means of labels on containers, material safety data sheets, and training programs.  To ensure the use of chemical fume hoods, safety eyewashes and showers and use of personal protective equipment to reduce chemical exposure.
