The purpose of the summer program is to provide effective training for collaborative research in ecology and epidemiology based on mathematical modeling and qualitative analysis. Our goal is to expose mathematics and statistics participants how to address issues of great importance in ecology and epidemiology, and to expose biology graduate students and researchers why and how mathematical and statistical techniques and tools are useful. We hope that the summer program will prepare participants who might wish to work as modelers in ecology or epidemiology, and to help participants in life sciences and mathematical sciences to learn a language in which they can communicate with one another. By bringing them together, we also hope it also provides opportunities for them to develop future collaborations.
