Poly(ionic Liquid)s as New Materials for CO2 Separations and Other Applications

Description of Technology

          This technology concerns new materials that can be used as solid sorbents and membranes for separating CO2 from other gas components, for example, from flue gas streams and from natural gas streams. Such sorbent and membranes materials are needed for pre-combustion separations, and natural gas separations, which are alternatives to the conventional amine absorption process, and which should address the following amine absorption issues: high-energy consumption to evaporate CO2 from the aqueous amine solution, low CO2 capacity, amine loss and degradation and equipment corrosion.


          The primary application of this technology is for separating CO2 from other gas components in a commercial setting. The high stability of the polymers renders this technology applicable for CO2 separation at high temperatures.

          Advantages of these sorbents include no volatile compound emissions, no corrosion problems and high regeneration efficiency. Polymer membranes fabricated from the poly(ionic liquid)s have both high selectivity and permeability. Furthermore, the use of this technology greatly reduces energy consumption in the reactivation step. When used as a membrane, it requires no reactivation or regeneration.
