The term "Select Agents" refers to a collection of designated infectious agents and toxins that, by their nature, have the potential to pose a severe threat to public, animal or plant health; this threat has resulted in the creation of a number of legislative acts.

Principal Investigator's Responsibility for Notification to Responsible Official (RO)

• If a Principal Investigator intends to possess, use, ship, or receive any Select Agent or Toxin that is regulated by the CDC or APHIS, they are required to contact the Alternate Responsible Official or the Responsible Official at 307-766-3277 prior to initiating any action.

• If at any time a Principal Investigator discovers in their possession, a Select Agent or Toxin that was not previously registered with the CDC or APHIS by the Responsible Official, they are required to notify the Responsible Official prior to initiating any action. Destruction of Select Agent or Toxin is strictly prohibited by Federal Regulations without prior notification, documentation, and registration through the RO.

• If a Principal Investigator intends to possess, use, ship, or receive any Select Agent or Toxin that meets the "Exemption" or "Exclusion" from Regulatory requirements in 42 CFR 73, 9 CFR 121 or 7 CFR 331, they are required to notify the Responsible Official prior to initiating any action.
