Wyoming-Saratov Study Abroad Program

Susannah's Tips

General Guidelines:

  • PACK LIGHT! There are almost no elevators anywhere, and hauling your luggage around train stations is not fun. Also packing an extra duffel bag in your suitcase is good for coming back.

  • Bring hand washable clothes, as most families do not have washer/dryer.

  • Bring things with you that will be used up or left behind, as this keeps you from packing too much and lets you have more room to bring things back.

  • Saratov can be warm, hot, muggy, rainy and occasionally cold, so make sure you have layers accordingly.

  • Bathrooms are dodgy, so always carry Kleenex and moist wipes. Also, American restaurants are your friends – chains have to have the same layout so bathrooms are similar to American ones.

  • Drink a ton of bottled water, especially when traveling on trains.

  • Russians do not use backpacks – you will stick out like a sore thumb if you do.

Things to pack:

  • Toilet paper was very handy, and took up space in your luggage that kept you from packing extra, and you can use it up before you go.

  • Extra passport photos are a must!

  • Linen items that take up space are good: wash cloths, towels, extra pillows, etc.

  • Ladies – conditioner is not readily available in Russia, so pack it.

  • Ladies – bring your own sanitary items, enough so that you won’t need to buy any clothespins and line are good for drying your clothes

  • Travel detergent is also handy.

  • Medicine. Make sure you have everything for upset stomach, colds and infection. (Ladies, Monistat is also good)

  • Gum, if you chew it.

  • Good sandals and sturdy shoes that are slightly stylish, as everyone around you is dressed to the nines.

  • Don’t forget the deodorant, because all of the Russians do.

  • Sunblock. Bug dope.

  • Good travel dictionary.

  • Gifts for your family – especially books, calendars, nice pictures of where you are from.

  • A diary/journal to record what you did, because you will forget names.

  • An umbrella or rain jacket.

  • ATM/debit card, as you will have to get cash.

Things to buy there:

  • Saratov has lots of bugs, but you can buy little plug-ins there for your room at night that work very well.

  • Kleenex – this is your toilet paper. Take it with you everywhere.

  • Moist wipes – very good for traveling on trains. Also bring with you everywhere.

  • Many toiletry items, such as soap, shampoo, razors, etc.
