Shawn Griffiths

Shawn Griffiths is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Wyoming. Shawn holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Utah State University (2009), M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Arkansas (2011) and a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Besides his formal education, he has also worked as an intern for a materials testing company and spent one summer working with a specialty geotechnical contractor in Oklahoma and Utah. As the son of a contractor, Shawn began his education as an engineer long before he attended the local University. His time spent building and remodeling houses, pouring concrete, and interpreting house plans prepared him for his formal schooling in civil engineering.

Quality research stems for solving real world problems for the benefit of society. As a geotechnical earthquake engineer, Shawn looks for these problems and strives to find meaningful and practical solutions to them. The main focus of Shawn’s research is on surface wave testing and site response analyses. Shawn has also been a part of two international teams to collect seismic data using both surface wave and borehole methods. His favorite type of work occurs outside, where he tries to spend as much time as possible. An area of current development is in the implementation of equivalent linear and nonlinear seismic site response models (particularly, the coupling of these models with surface wave data to better estimate uncertainty). Shawn also has an interest in soil structure interaction, finding new applications for surface wave testing, and engineering education.

Shawn and his wife currently have four children who keep them busy with soccer, swim, gymnastics, piano, choir, and many other fun activities. They enjoy camping, traveling, playing, and discovering all that beautiful Wyoming has to offer.
