Science ALIVE! modules provide MIDDLE SCHOOL students an in-depth, interdisciplinary, inquiry-based learning experience. They were developed and piloted during the Science Posse's Exploring Science Summer Camps.
These are examples of modules the Science Posse can offer. The specific activities we bring to your school will depend the Fellows who attend.
|Can You Carry a Million? In the movies, the hero
dramatically pursues the bad guy who has just stolen a million dollars
down dark alleys, across busy streets and over high fences. Students determine if this scenario is even possible by determining the weight and amount of space occupied by a million dollars.
||Can You Build a Rube Goldberg Contraption? Students explore potential and kinetic energy and energy transfers by building Rube Goldberg devices. Named after American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg, these devices are deliberately over-engineered machines that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion.|
Is the Answer Blowing in the Wind? Students explore the effects of blade design, number of blades, wind
speed and other factors on the power output of windmills. They also
examine environmental issues and power storage.
||Can Dropping a Penny Off the Empire State Building Kill Someone? Students examine freefall and projectile motion and collect data about velocity (including terminal velocity) and acceleration. (Depending on grade level and time, the ballistic coefficient (ability to overcome air resistance) may also be calculated and discussed.)|
