Peabody Energy Advanced Coal Technology Laboratory

Located on the first floor of the EIC, the Peabody Energy Advanced Coal Technology Laboratory will be used primarily to analyze and research coal conversion technologies. The conversion of low-value fossil resources into higher-value products — or advanced conversion — is a key component of SER’s strategic plan. This lab will support research in the conversion of natural gas and coal into various manufactured products and liquid fuels.

For example, two projects soon to be active in this lab include studying the behavior of coal inside the reactor for better understanding and development of reactors and system designs for coal conversion and the conversion of synthesis gas from coal to ethylene glycol, with a focus on commercializing processes.

WPX Drilling Simulator Teaching Laboratory

Located on the second floor of the EIC, the 1,296-square-foot WPX Drilling Simulator teaching lab provides students and educators with a fully visualized and interactive simulation experience of drilling rigs.  The system allows instructors and trainees to explore, test, and interact with an extensive array of drilling rig components.  The lab is used for petroleum engineering and geoscience courses and provides students and industry personnel the opportunity to obtain professional well control certifications.  Equipped with 20 software licenses, the lab is capable of simulating countless drilling rig components and scenarios. 

Laboratory components include:

  • Drilling controls and gauges

Enhanced Oil Recovery Research Laboratory

Also located on the second floor, the Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute will conduct research in this laboratory to help producers recover more oil from Wyoming fields, specifically from mature fields where more than half of the state’s oil remains stranded. The lab provides enhanced oil recovery services to Wyoming operators, including technical consulting and research on enhanced oil recovery methods.

A suite of state-of-the-art high pressure, high temperature equipment has been acquired by the lab, including phase behavior apparatus, gas chromatographs, tensiometer and viscometer for reservoir conditions. The high pressure, high temperature coreflood lines along with a visual cell system enable researchers to test and observe the feasibility and stability of various enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods with reservoir rocks and fluids.

Hess Digital Rock Physics Laboratory

Located on the third floor, the Hess Digital Rock Physics Laboratory houses the world’s most modern lab for experimental investigation of multi-phase fluid flow through porous media.  The lab encompasses the most advanced high-resolution 3-D X-ray microscope available, making the University of Wyoming the first university in the world to put this state-of-the-art tool in the hands of faculty and researchers to increase understanding of underground reservoirs of oil and natural gas.  The custom-designed equipment in this lab enables UW researchers to obtain ultra-high resolution nano-images of porous media.  Once scanned, these nano-scale 3-D maps of pore space can be used to more accurately characterize and model flow and fluid occupancy in reservoir rocks relevant to subsurface reservoirs, which can contain oil and natural gas.  This laboratory is the central research laboratory for the PIRI Research Group and the Center for Fundamentals of Subsurface Flow (CFSF), an SER Center of Excellence.  The experimental research and complex data generated in this laboratory can be viewed and analyzed in the Shell 3-D Visualization laboratory using the computational capabilities of UW’s Advanced Research Computing Center (ARCC) as well as the NWSC supercomputing center.  

The lab will provide UW and visiting researchers tremendous advantages in performing multi-scale, multi-phase fluid flow in porous media with applications in the recovery of oil and gas from conventional and unconventional reservoirs where extremely complicated displacement physics are encountered.
