Anadarko Fellowship for Excellence in Energy Scholarship-Graduate Students

Anadarko Petroleum CorpA generous endowment provided by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation will annually fund a prestigious award for PhD students enrolled at the University of Wyoming.  The fellowships will be competitively awarded to recognize and advance excellence in energy scholarship at the University of Wyoming.  The fellowships will promote innovative and entrepreneurial research in areas aligning with Anadarko's energy portfolio.  These areas include but are not limited to oil and gas, environmental stewardship and reclamation, transportation, regulation and policy, health and safety.  Visit Anadarko's web site at for relevant topic areas.

Academic Year

The fellowship will be awarded for the 2014-2015 academic year through the student's financial aid package.

Number of Awards

Up to five $5,000 fellowships (subject to available funding) will be awarded to support PhD students who have completed preliminary examinations and who show outstanding support a summer or academic year research experience. The term of each fellowship is one academic year.


Funding should demonstrably enhance the awardees' scholarly development by supporting travel, research supplies, and equipment.  During the spring semester, recipients will participate in the Energy Research and Development Symposium.  The public event will be held at the University of Wyoming and Anadarko fellows will present a synopsis summarizing the project, including significance, results and potential contributions to the energy sector.  Fellowship outcomes may include refereed journal articles, intellectual property development and commercialization of innovations, new collaborative research programs and enhanced external funding.  Students must maintain full-time enrollment (minimum 9 credit hours) and maintain a UW cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.  Recipients are expected to attend the annual School of Energy Resources awards banquet.

Students currently supported through the School of Energy Resources Graduate Assistantship program are not eligible for the Anadarko Fellowship

Application Process

Applications will be accepted from current University of Wyoming PhD candidates until July 18, 2014.  The application, resume, research project proposal and unofficial college transcripts must be sent as a single pdf file to Recommendation letters can be submitted separately to

Applications must include the following:

  • The completed application (see the last page of the downloaded document)
  • Applicant's current resume
  • A 1-2 page research project proposal developed with a UW faculty mentor. The proposal must outline the prospective research project, a budget, rationale and significance, projected outcomes and methodology. Also include the anticipated start date and timeline of the fellowship.
  • One recommendation letter from the UW faculty mentor
  • Two internal reference letters from UW faculty addressing the abilities of the applicant
  • Unofficial college transcripts
