Health, Safety and Supervision
The health, safety, and security of our students are our primary concerns. The
quality and consistency of our staff, training, communications, and medical
facilities ensure that your child is well taken care of.
What kind of health, safety, and security are provided?
Doctor appointments are arranged with the University of Wyoming Student Health
Service. Students are taken to Ivinson Memorial Hospital for 24-hour emergency care.
Students needing medical attention of any kind are accompanied by Energy Summer
Institute (ESI) staff. ESI staff also obtains any prescribed medications resulting
from medical services. Parents are notified before medical visits with the
exception of life-threatening emergencies. Students must complete a medical
history form prior to attendance.
Although we believe UW and the Laramie community is a safe environment, ESI
counselors and University of Wyoming dorm housing staff are on duty on- and off-
campus 24 hours a day. For additional safety, access to the building is
electronically controlled. Visitors are required to check-in at the front
desk. In keeping with a collegiate atmosphere, students are permitted to walk
freely on campus, but are required to adhere to a "buddy system."
What staff support and supervision are provided?
The Energy Summer Institute staff consists of 3 counselors. The counselors
stay on campus and live with the students for the duration of the Institute.
They supervise and counsel students as well as participate as group leaders in
activities. They are also in charge of planning and chaperoning evening excursions and recreational activities. Counselors work supportively
with residence-hall staff to make the Institute more
effective and interesting during the students' one-week stay.
